Monday Wakeup WOD – 02/28/2011

28 Feb

Today starts a new cycle at CFPA. Tim has us doing snatches for the next 3 weeks. WOO HOO! My problem with snatches is that when the load gets heavy, I tend to not open my hips up wide enough, and then compensate for it by landing really wide. It’s not like I can really work on it right now. My big belly is in the way, so I cant keep the bar as close to me as possible. Still, I’d like to be to fix this landing issue, and get a decent number in.

Snatch: 33#(5)-53#(5)-63#(3)-73#(3)-78#(Failed second rep, 3)

And then our WOD:

  • 400 m run
  • 15 DB Cleans(25#, Rx’d was 35#)
  • 400 m run
  • 15 DB Squat Cleans
  • 400 m run
  • 15 DB Thrusters
  • Simple right?! It was killer! At first I thought I could do 35#, but boy was I proven wrong. I did a couple reps with 25#, and then picked up the 30# DB. Nope, no way Jose! I couldn’t do it, so I stayed with the good ole 25# DB. It was a fast WOD, and I felt like I was being pushed to try to stay on top. I finished at 11:15, and was GASPING for air. I felt like watermelon was going to jump out of my mouth. I couldn’t control my breathing at all! That’s what I get for taking 4 days off! But it definitely felt good to get back at it.

    Whole30 – Day 21

    27 Feb

Today was another day where I snacked too much throughout the day to eat dinner. I woke up and got Mason ready, and was able to whip up a new batch of Homemade Mayo. I had such a hard time at the beginning trying to get the mixture to thicken up. I used a spoon first to whip everything together, then used a whisk. My hand was getting so tired, I decided to try my emerssion blender again. I didn’t have much luck with it last week, but today…it saved me! I got a good batch of mayo, and I’m ready to make some crab cakes. πŸ™‚

I headed off to work, and snacked on some fruit, and dried mangoes. Yes, I’ve been eating dried mangoes. Maybe a little too much, but they help get me through the work day. I worked until 2, and then met up with a couple of girlfriends in Palo Alto. We went to Pluto’s. I was there yesterday, and ordered tri tip and herb roasted turkey, along with roasted veggies. Today, I decided to go for a large salad with tri tip, and some extra turkey. So good, and I am still FULL!! It was a nice day to hang out in Palo Alto and catch up with girlfriends while still being able to stay Whole30.

I came home and the jerky was ready, so I munched on that. Some pieces were full of fat..ICK! Yes I know I should trim the fat, but I got really lazy yesterday to be so picky about the fat. Yummy! I boiled some eggs to make Deviled Eggs. These are so easy to make once you have the mayo, and are an easy snack to just grab and go.

I ended the night with a cara orange. Man, I am full and hopefully I have the strength to have some fun at CFPA tomorrow morning. Hope everyone had a good weekend! Day 21 is in the bag!

    Whole30 – Day 20(Food Prep Day)

    27 Feb

I had to prep all sorts of food for the coming week on Saturday instead of Sunday because I had to go into work on Sunday. Also, I thought it was going to rain all day Saturday, but it turned out to be sunny…sunny BUT COLD! Anyways, my eats were good. I didn’t really eat dinner because I was full from snacking on the food I was making. And with all the cooking I did, I forgot to snap pics! Ugh! It sucks, because I made some yummy beef meatballs!

First thing I made was some Cauliflower fried rice. Yup, I’ve made this every single week, and I can’t get enough of it. I might switch it up next month, but this is great to have on hand, because I can’t say I DON’T have any veggies in my fridge. I usually split it up into four servings.

Next, I had two bell peppers just sitting in the refrigerator for about a week already, and I had to do something with it before it went bad. NomNom Paleo has a simple roasted bell pepper recipe that I mimicked. Super easy, and fast. While the bell peppers were roasting, I had some stuffed portobello mushrooms that I used to make with shallots, garlic, avocado oil, and balsamic vinaigrette. Another great easy go to recipe from NomNom Paleo.

My next project was to dice onions and make some grass fed meatballs with meat spaghetti sauce. I bought some Whole30 ingredient approved marinara sauce to make spaghetti for the hubby. I’m just going to use that sauce to pour onto the meatballs.

I couldn’t stop snacking’ on the meatballs, and eating up the meat sauce. It was YUMMY!

Finally, I had the daunting task of cutting up the flank steak I bought at Costco last week to make some beef jerky with. This time, I used the beef jerky recipe from Jen’s Gone Paleo. I really need a meat slicer. My hands are all cut up…OUCH! But I was able to marinate the jerky, and let it sit over night. Plopped it into the dehydrator today, and got a good batch of jerky. The flank steak I got was not grass fed, and had a lot of fat in it. Next time I gotta use a piece that is much leaner.

I used the Salt Like BBQ spice, and I added some Red Pepper Flakes to it, because we like our jerky spicy. Next time, I think I’m going to switch 1 cup of apple juice with 1 cup of coconut aminos. Coconut aminos is so expensive, I didn’t really want to waste so much on jerky.

So, I think that’s everything! Oh, I made another batch of the Easy Trail Mix. And that was how I spent my Saturday…along with hanging out with the family, and doing a little bit of work. Day 20 is in the bag!!!

    Whole30 – Day 19

    26 Feb

I woke up to a bad start yesterday. I overslept and couldn’t make it to Crossfit. I was anxious to come into class too, because I was curious what our WOD would be. I decided to go get my blood drawn for the glucose test that everyone is suppose to do at around 16 weeks. Of course, I was a little late because the doctor forgot to put the order in for me. Anyways, I went to get a vial of blood drawn, got to work, and started working away. Around 8:30, I got super light-headed. I think I was in need of some sugar…or something! But I was HUNGRY! I usually go to bread in these type of situations, but I had my primal pac. I called hubby to bring me more, because I needed sufficient snacks if I was going to get through a heavy load at work. I ended up eating 3 primal pacs before lunch time. I was finally feeling “FULL”.

Around 2, I had a small serving of Grass fed beef brisket and caulfilower fried rice. I munched on some fruit and dried fruit when I got home, and prepared my courtesy of Jen’s Gone Paleo. I roasted the pork with some sweet potatoes, white potatoes(for the hubby), and carrots. I didn’t do the cinnamon or pears that came with the recipe. I just used the Tangine spice recipe minus the cardamon, because I didn’t have any available.

And that was my Friday. Not too good, not too bad. Day 19 is in the bag!

    Whole30 – Day 18: 20 week appt

    24 Feb

No foodie pics or workouts today. I got into work at 5:30 and it was non stop from there. Here’s a quick rundown of what I had.

    Breakfast: Primal Pac
Snack:Fruits, deviled eggs, mac nuts(All throughout the day)
Lunch:Tuna salad with Organic Romaine Lettuce and Spinach
Dinner:Grass fed NY Steak with sauteed mushrooms, and half an avocado

I should of added more veggies to my meal. Tomorrow…

I went for a monthly checkup today with my doc. Watermelon is healthy, and everything measured “normal” at the big ultrasound. What I was more worried about was my weight. At last month’s checkup, I gained a whole bunch of weight. It was a lot, and I actually got the…”What are you doing for exercise?” talk from the doc. Today, when I got on the scale, I didn’t gain a single ounce! WOO HOO!!! I’m just saying..this $hit works. I had to slow my roll with the “binge” eating, and get back to a healthy lifestyle. And it’s only been 2.5 weeks since I started this, so this just proves to me even more that this Whole30 program/Paleo works. Bacon, mac nuts, coconut milk, avocado…all full of fat, yet I didn’t gain any fat?! AWESOME!

    Whole30 – Day 17

    23 Feb

I woke up this morning ready to tackle another Metcon WOD. We had a few people who usually don’t come out to the 5AM class, so it was good to see them again. Here was what we did.

    WOD (The double under sandwich):

  • 50 Double Unders
  • 21-15-9: Wall Balls(14#), Hang Power Cleans(65#), Abmat Sit-ups
  • 50 Double Unders
  • Results: 17:04

Eeeeeh, not the best time at all, and it’s because I can’t seem to string those double unders together. Also, the first 50 double unders felt like they took forever. I think I was the last one to finish them. I couldn’t not get a rhythm going. The first double under, I already f*ed up on. I need to go buy a new rope now and practice practice practice. Still, a good workout. The only non-Rx’d thing I didn’t do was wall balls. I still can’t get over the 10ft line. Not sure when that’s going to happen.

For breakfast I had some deviled eggs and macadamia nuts. I’m not sure I’d consider that breakfast, because an hour later I had a Primal Pac. My lunch was just leftover Grass Fed Beef Brisket with Cauliflower Fried Rice.

I came home, and cooked up the lemon garlic scallops that I had prepared the night before.

I definitely overcooked the scallops maybe 3 minutes too long. It tasted like rubber…me no like! I served some sauteed broccolini with slices of proscuitto with the scallops. I thought a took a picture of it, but my iPhone fails me again.

Anyways, I’m winding down with my coconut milk, strawberries, blueberries, and easy trail mix dessert. Yum! Day 17….in the bag!

    Whole30 – Day 16

    23 Feb

Got into work at 5:30 this morning. No workout today, just because I got so much $hit to do at my desk! Oh well. I got an americano before I headed to work. Yummy! Definitely got my morning started. I didn’t eat till 9:30. I guess that’s good. A 15 hr fast? I shouldn’t be fasting, but I just wasn’t hungry, and pretty lazy to go warm up my food. The code monkey in me was just coming out.

Anyways, for breakfast I had tuna salad with a side of organic romaine lettuce. It was a pretty big serving, so I was pretty full. I had 3 deviled eggs to snack on, because again..I was lazy to go warm up my lunch.

For lunch, I had leftovers from last night’s dinner which was Grass Fed Beef Brisket with a side of Garlic Mash and Cauliflower fried rice. Awhile later, I had a primal pac with some strawberries.

I got home, and was going to sear up some lemon & garlic scallops, but I was by my lonesome tonight. Scallops don’t taste good when you are eating a lone. πŸ˜‰ Anyways, I decided to save the scallops for tomorrow’s dinner, and whip up a quick crab salad to eat. The crab meat was leftovers from our Saturday night splurge. I mixed it with some carrots and homemade mayo. I need more of a crunch to go with the salad, so I chopped up half a fuiji apple, and that was it! Yummy, delicious, refreshing crab salad with organic romaine lettuce.

Afterwards, I had a bowl of trail mix with strawberries, blueberries, and coconut milk. Yummy! Day 16 in the bag!

    Whole30 – Day 15…Grass fed brisket!

    22 Feb

Yesterday was a crazy busy day at work. I just can’t seem to get enough accomplished in 9 hours. At least I had some healthy eats to get me through the day. Everyone else was enjoying the day off because it was President’s Day. For example, my sister went to SF to indulge in some non Paleo eats(not like she eats Paleo anyways, just sayin’). One of our favorite places that she stopped at was Golden Gate Bakery to pick up some egg tarts. I’ve loved egg tarts since I was a kid! Probably because I love any type of egg custard dessert. So yummy, but so sugary. I need to find a paleo version of it. LOL. BTW, I didn’t eat this! Goals remember?!?!

Anyways, moving onto my eats for the day.

Breakfast was really simple…two fried eggs with some Garlic Cauliflower Mash. I had some macadamia nuts as well.

This got me all the way to 1PM! Yes, I didn’t eat until 1! I was sort of lazy to go to the microwave to warm up my food, but then I remembered that I didn’t need to warm my food! It had made tuna salad with a side of lettuce. I had a primal pac to go along with it, because I realized it my lunch was not enough.

I put some grass fed beef brisket into my slow cooker this morning with about 4 cups of chicken broth. I seasoned the brisket the day before with 1 tsp of the following: salt, pepper, garlic powder, paprika, and onion powder. I added some pearl onions, and a 10 garlic cloves in the slower cooker as well.

I checked on the brisket when I got home, and it wasn’t as soft as I thought it would be, so I turned the slow cooker on for another hour. I original put it on for 7 hours! The extra hour helped out a lot, because I didn’t have to pull on it too much to get the pieces apart. Another hour would of been perfect…next time! Then I seasoned up some asparagus with avocado oil, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Popped that into the oven for 10 minutes at 400 degrees. And tada…there was dinner! Sorry, the picture isn’t very clear, and I’m not that patient with my iPhone anymore. It’s getting old and very slow!

So, I survived a long metcon and good eats for a Monday. Day 15 in the bag! πŸ™‚

    Deviled Eggs

    22 Feb

Deviled Eggs, what can I say. I rarely eat these little things, because I only see them at parties. But when there are some around, I can scarf them down like there’s no tomorrow(the binge in me comes out!). My mom never really made these at home, so they were a treat when I did have them. Since I have a ton of Paleo Mayo at home right now, and not quite sure what to do with it all, I decided to boil a few eggs and make some deviled eggs.

    Ingredient List:

    5 eggs
    1 spoonful of Paleo Mayo
Dill or Chives(optionally, I didn’t have any on hand)
    Salt and Pepper(optional)

First I got a small pot of water, and turned the heat on high. I got the water boiling and threw the eggs in there for 10 minutes. Afterwards, I let it sit there for about 20 minutes, and peeled the shells. I split the eggs in half, scooped out the yolk, and put them into a bowl. Then, I took a spoonful of mayo and just whipped everything together. This is when you can add some chives or dill to it, but I didn’t have any on hand. If you want it creamier, add more mayo! It’s all about estimating to me. Next, scoop the mixture back into the yolk, and sprinkle some paprika on it. Yummy – an easy snack on the go!

My hubby actually asked…”Why do you have to scoop back out the yolk and put it back in?!” Obviously, he never had deviled eggs when he was a kid, and didn’t realize there was mayo in it! LOL.

    Morning Wakeup Call – 500m row/400m run

    21 Feb

This week at my box, we are doing the normal Crossfit WODs. These WODs usually take more than 20 minutes to do, and they are KILLER workouts. What did I wake up to this morning — Two metcon moves that I despise right now because I’m getting slower and slower at them as I get bigger and bigger! It’s a deadly combo!

    5 RFT:

  • 500 m Row
  • 400 m Run
  • I knew I was going to come in last, no doubt about it. Without being fatigued, my row is around 2:10 for 500m(All out best was 1:59). Being fatigued, I can get down to 2:30. So, I hated the WOD, but just thought, I’m just going to get through it, and finish it. We have some fire-breathers in our class, and it’s awesome to witness how fast they were! Totally inspiring…I love it, because it just pushes me even more. Especially when the terminator was trying to pass me up for the second time. I knew he was coming up behind me, so I had to run faster. No way was I going to let him pass me up…AGAIN! LOL. The rows felt like it was taking forever, and I was giving up on form because I was getting fatigued. I just had to mentally push through(I tend to close my eyes when rowing because I don’t like to look at the monitor), and Tim reminded me to keep in control. It’s definitely all about form with the rower, and I think I’ll look up more drills to practice. Special thanks to Mint for running the last 400 with me. It definitely gave me strength to finish. πŸ™‚ Once the WOD was over, I was gasping for air, but I was glad I made it through. I would even go as far to say that I enjoyed and “liked” the workout. Maybe I’ll even say, I can’t wait to do it again, so I can improve on my time. LOL.

It was a great way to start a Monday. Oh ya…my time: 26:06.
