05/30/2011 – Clean Eats

31 May

How was everyone’s long weekend? I had a great 4 day weekend with my little family. I wish all weekends were 4 days long, but alas we all gotta hustle and make that money. I ate clean about 60% of the time, with a non-Paleo meal on Saturday(Thai food) plus dessert(shared a Cinnabon with hubby), and a few slices of garlic bread from Henry’s Hi-Life on Sunday night. I didn’t take any pictures of my eats, because honestly I wasn’t thinking about it that much. We spent Saturday hanging out with lil’ munchkin’, and then took him cherry picking on Sunday. It was my first time, and it was sort of fun. Lots of families get together and go pick cherries. I think it’s a great deal($2.50/lb) and a good experience, even though we had to drive an hour into the suburbs. Sunday night, hubby and I had a date-night which we haven’t had since March or April.

And now Monday comes around, and my day was jam packed. I got up early and started prepping for our tiny little BBQ. I prepped mini grass-fed burgers and marinated some two pieces of grass-fed flat iron steak. Once I was able to make Lil’ Munchkin’ some breakfast, it was time for hubby to take over, so I could go tackle “Murph” at CFPA.

I got home close to 11 and still had to prep some roasted bell peppers and roasted Portobello mushrooms. I should of taken a picture of all the food I prepped, but honestly I was in a rush, and didn’t have time to stop what I was doing, wash my hands, to take a pic, and then get my hands dirty again(I don’t know how you do it Nom Nom Paleo…that’s dedication!). I didn’t get a chance to actually eat the food until 1:30!! I was starving, but too busy chasing the kids around making sure no one broke a bone. I had all the intention to actually eat the grass fed sliders with Hawaiian King Bread rolls. I bought two big packs from Costco just for this BBQ. I thought I deserved to eat the bread, because I totally killed the workout, but when it came down to it, I didn’t want to. I started to feel guilty, and then thought if I had 1 it wouldn’t hurt, but I knew if I had 1 bite, I would end up having another and another, and then there would be no self control. So, I had to control myself from the beginning, and not give in. Now we have over 1.5 packets of Hawaiian King Bread in our pantry, staring at me. SIGH.

Anyways, I ate 2 sliders sans Hawaiian Bread with Broiled Proscuitto wrapped Asparagus, and some roasted bell peppers. I had a small piece of tillamook cheese on one of the sliders. I was freakin’ pooped, so as soon as Lil’ Munchkin’ went down for his afternoon nap, I went to bed too. However, I my nap didn’t feel like a nap. I was burnt out, and it felt like I was still awake the entire time I was sleeping. Got up at 4, and my entire body was numb.

We had lots of leftovers…lots! I was hoping for leftovers though, because I honestly don’t want to cook that much the next few days. Hubby is going to be gone, and I’ll be a single parent for 4 days while pregnant. I just want to have food there for me to easily warm up, and spend as much time with Lil’ Munchkin’ as I can.

For dinner, I cooked up some bacon to add to the sliders, and it tasted soooo much better. šŸ™‚ I had 2 slides with probably 3 pieces of bacon, a side of guac and asparagus. I munched on cherries and watermlon throughout the day. Oooh, and for dessert, I ended with a piece of 85% dark chocolate.

I know my sugar tantrums are creeping back in. I’m going to let some slide but come August, it’s going to be cleansing time again, which only means Whole30!

Hope everyone had a fun-filled weekend with family and friends. I sure did, but now I know that I’m so ready to pop. I hope he isn’t shy because I will take him early if he wants. Just not this weekend, because hubby won’t be around. šŸ™‚

05/29/2011 – Memorial Day Murph

31 May

My 4 day weekend has been very relaxing with some activity in it. In case you are wondering I ate clean 60% off the time with a couple of cheats on Saturday, and a small cheat on Sunday. I’ll go into some detail later in another post because I’d like to talk more about how I spent my Memorial Day morning working out with the great community of Crossfit Palo Alto.

All of us did the the well known “Murph” WOD which was named in honor of Lt. Michael P. Murphy. You can learn more about Murphy’s story here. We had about 30 people in the 9AM class, and it was great to meet everyone who I don’t see in The Five Tribe. to be honest, I’ve been agonizing about this workout the night before, and knew it would hurt to do it. Right before I left the house, I confessed to hubby what the workout consisted of, and he said “WHAT!, You better take it easy!”. I promised I would and was going to scale the pull-ups. As Tim was giving us our mental boost to just “suck it up and get through the workout”, because IT IS just a workout, and our pain in that moment was nothing compared to what Lt. Michael Murphy went through, I completely stopped worrying about what time I was going to get or if I was going to finish last. Or, how I was going to get through 20 rounds of Cindy. All that didn’t matter anymore, I just wanted to finish and honor the men and women who were serving our country. And also honor the only Marine that I personally knew who died in combat, my BFF’s cousin, Cor. Jeremiah Allen Baro.

Murph

  • 1 Mile Run
  • 100 Pull Ups
  • 200 Push Ups
  • 300 Squats
  • 1 Mile Run
  • The first mile took me about 9 minutes. Not too bad considering I haven’t ran a mile in a few months. I decided to break down the pull ups, push ups, and squats into “Cindy” rounds(5 pull ups, 10 push ups, and 15 squats). I started to do the pull ups in the purple band, but I soon found out it took too much effort for me to get my feet into the band. My big belly was getting in the way and I couldn’t lift my left leg high enough to get my feet into the band. I did maybe 6 out of the 20 total rounds with the purple band. The rest of the rounds I did just the normal kipping. I was able to do 5 straight the entire time too. Very proud of that!

With the push ups, I never thought of scaling them beforehand, I was always more worried about the pull-ups. But when I went into the first round, I just put my knees down and scaled it. I think the push-ups would of been what slowed me down if I didn’t scale them. I was able to do 10 in a row all the time. Probably because the belly is in the way, so I don’t have to go down as far.

As for the squats, they were easy, but I wasn’t able to keep perfect form. At times I was on my toes, and Tim kept yelling at me to stay on my heels. I had two rounds of Cindy left, so I decided just to do the 10 pull-ups and get them out of the way. Then I would do 10 push-ups, 15 squats, 10 push ups, 15 squats.

When I started the last mile, my legs were so tight, I was literally taking baby steps. About 4 or 5 people passed me up, and boy was I happy to see the 800 line. Once I got there, I knew I was within minutes of finishing, and I kept telling Watermelon, “We are almost there, thanks for hanging in there with me!” My poor baby. lol. R caught up with me, and I wanted to stick with her, and we finished together! It was a great ending with everyone cheering each other on. Once you finish a workout like that, there’s like a new wave of energy that passes through you. I might have been breathing hard and just physically exhausted, but that didn’t matter, because I was mentally re-energized. I felt like I could accomplish or tackle anything!

    Result: 50:27

This was the longest WOD that I’ve ever done, but I can’t wait to do it again. Thanks to everyone at CFPA for the support and encouragement. It was nice to meet everyone from the other classes, and get a chance to workout with Nom Nom Paleo, Triebo, Alma, R, etc.

    Here’s our 9AM Murph Crew

05/27/2011 – Clean Eats plus Dairy

    28 May

Yes, I had more dairy. It’s weird, because I’ve been craving more dairy during this trimester. Since I don’t have a problem with it, I keep it to a small amount.

Can you believe our family survived without eggs this week? I wasn’t able to buy any from the Farmer’s Market last Sunday, and forgot all about it when I went to TJs. So this morning, I fried up two Spicy Italian Chicken Sausages for lil’ munchkin’ and I. I mixed his with roasted sweet potatoes. Luckily he ate most of the chicken sausage and all of the sweet potatoes.

    That’s him!

My little bowl contained the sausage plus cabbage and cinnamon sweet potatoes from last night’s dinner.

I had to drop hubby at the dealership in Fremont so he can do his thing around lunch time. While waiting for him, I drove lil’ munchkin’ around Pacific Commons to find something to eat. The first thing I saw that was Paleo compliant was In-N-Out. So, I ordered togo, and lil’ munchkin’ and I ate in the car. My meal was a double patty protein style burger with grilled onions and tomatoes. Hold the spread, hold the ketchup and mustard.

It was time to go meet hubby, but he asked me not to come yet. Lil’ munchkin’ and I killed some time at Starbucks, and this is where I ordered my americano with a splash of heavy cream. I didn’t drink all of it. Just 1/2. When I brought it back to hubby, he took a sip, made a cringe on his face, and immediately asked “What is NOT in here that makes it taste so bitter?!!?”. Duh! Sugar! LOL. I like it though.

We came home, and everyone took a quick nap. I got up around 4ish, and lil’ munchkin’ wanted cheese. I don’t know what happened, but I ended up eating a slice of Tillamook cheese. Yummy!

Huby then took lil’ munchkin’ to the park, while I stayed home to prepare all of us dinner. Hubby thawed some a New York Strip Steak for us. I didn’t have any pre-made seasoning, so I just added salt and pepper to the steaks. I went scouring for some side dishes, and found Primal-Palate’s Steak and Roasted Broccoli recipe. I had tons of broccoli, so I roasted a bunch with olive oil, salt, and pepper. I squeezed some lemon on it afterwards, and ta-da!

Then I decided to stir fry some mushrooms that I picked up at the SJ Downtown Farmer’s Market today. I didn’t have any anchovies, so I used a couple dashes of fish sauce with red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper.

Then hubby grilled up the steaks.

And my plate looked like this:

I ate 3/4 of the steak and all the veggies. For dessert, I had a piece of 85% dark choco with watermelon. Yes, I know more sugar.

OOOOOH, I forgot to mention that I ate a pound of cherries. Yes, that’s bad. But they are only in season for a month or two!!!

    05/27/2011 – HSPU Skill

    28 May

Today at CFPA we worked on HSPUs. I think I was able to do 3 maybe 4 this time last year. I was able to do a one minute handstand hold too. Sucks that I have to start from square one after watermelon comes out. Maybe it’ll be one of the first skills I work on while trying to recover.

Anyways, I used the box to practice these. My first 5 reps were with the abmat. The next 5 reps I put a 15# plate plus abmat. Then the next 2 sets of 5 I used a 45# plate. Nothing difficult, just working on my shoulder strength.

The WOD was a quick one too, and Tim informed us that it was going to be nasty. He told me not to go too crazy.

    For Time:1->10

  • Front Squats(135#/95#)
  • Ring Dips
  • Result 8:16 not rx’d

Of course I didn’t do this RX’d. My worry was that I wasn’t going to be able to clean a 95# bar 10 or more times, and I don’t have ring dips yet. I used the pink band for ring dips, and put 73# on the bar. I finished the workout first, and immediately regretted not putting 78# or even 83# on the bar. I was able to do all the front squats without dropping the bar. I think I broke down the ring dips during the 8th round.

A little to easy, but I should be taking it easy right now. I thought I didn’t work hard enough, but the soreness is creeping into my quads and triceps as I type.

Have a great memorial day weekend!!!

05/26/2011 – Clean Eats plus Heavy Cream

    27 May

Yes, I had more coffee with heavy cream again. It was yummy, and it wasn’t that much. When I drink coffee, I don’t drink the whole thing, so don’t worry..minimal amount.

Let’s start at the beginning though with breakfast. It wasn’t the best breakfast, but at least I didn’t starve: Watermelon and Spicy Italian Chicken Sausage from Trader Joe’s.

I munched on macadamia nuts before I went to my doctor appointment. I’m starting to see him every two weeks now, which means it’s ALMOST TIME! I gained 1# in two weeks. WOO HOO! After I got out of the docs, I went to Chipotle and Starbucks. I picked up a carnitas salad with a side of guacamole.

I got a tall americano with a splash of heavy cream. I drank half of it before I threw it away. Yes, I normally don’t finish all my coffee.

I munched on some watermelon as I was playing with lil’ munchkin’. Once hubby got home, I got dinner ready: Bacon Wrapped Pork Tenderloin with Cinnamon Sweet Potatoes, and a side of cabbage.

    My dinner plate:

Yes, I ate pork all day, but I promise it doesn’t happen that often! We got lots of beef, so we’ll be BBQing all this weekend. It’s time to relax and enjoy the long weekend with hubby and lil’ munchkin’. Who knows when it’ll be this calm again.

    The Paleo Baby

    26 May

I wanted to mention that I recently followed Dawn from The Paleo Baby on Twitter.

She sent me an email asking me if I would like to answer some questions for a post she was going to write about in regards to paleo, pregnancy, and food cravings. Of course, I said yes, and on Monday and Wednesday, she posted about the topic. Post 1 focused more on “pregnancy cravings” and if Paleo had any affect on stopping it. Post 2, where my thoughts were incorporated, focused more on what you can do with pressure from people who don’t eat Paleo. Dawn wrote a great post, and her thoughts are almost exactly like mine.

I have a hubby who is not fully Paleo, but he eats whatever I make. If he wants rice or noodles, he’ll make it. I don’t try to force anything upon him. I’d like to think that I’m not that bad of a cook, and that is why he can stand my Paleo foods. And I hate saying Paleo…it’s real food people. Real beefy goodness made with lots of spices, minimal salt, and this may be a surprise to those on the other spectrum, but FULL OF FLAVOR!

Anyways, I’ve digressed. Like I told Dawn and I may have mentioned it in my other posts, eating real foods(or Paleo) has helped me keep my strength in Crossfit. It gives me the energy to get up 3 times a week at the crack of dawn, and be involved in a great community like CFPA. It’s also given me energy to keep up with my 19 month old who is getting faster, stronger, and more intelligent by the hour, while pregnant. I’m not saying I don’t get exhausted, because I do. It’s just my exhaustion happens less often then most people who are 8 months pregnant.

So, if you are pregnant, keep eating healthy for you, your growing baby, and the people around you. If you do stray and treat yourself, make sure it’s worth it!!! Cravings are cravings, and we fight them everyday, pregnant or not. Especially if our goal is to stay healthy. Try not to use the “pregnant” excuse to eat greasy and starchy foods EVERY SINGLE DAY. Trust me, you’ll regret it when 7 months comes around and you can’t do anything for yourself.

05/25/2011 – Clean Eats and Our Split Half Cow from Morris Grassfed

    26 May

Yummy goodness today, and it sure was busy.

Once I got to my desk, I munched on sauteed kale and the other half of my dinner, steak!

That kept me full for a bit, and then I had a handful of macadamia nuts. Went to trader joe’s and picked up some snacks. When I got back to my desk, I had 2 duck legs and asparagus wrapped with prosciutto.

I’m glad my coworkers don’t sneak up behind me while I’m eating lunch. Would be funny to have them see me gnawing on a duck leg. So yummy!!!

I was still hungry a couple hours later so I opened a can or sardines drenched in olive oil, and noshed on dried cranberries and dried mangoes.

I left work early, and guess what I picked up!?!?!?! Our 80# of beefy goodness from Morris GrassFed. I ordered an addition 10# of ground beef and extra beef bones. Check it out!

I guess we’ll be hosting a lot of BBQs this summer, and making lots of burgers. I gave 5# of the ground beef to my MIL. I also brought over more than 10# of ground beef to my mom and a bag of bones because we didn’t have a place to store it all. Here is what our chest freezer looked like after all was packed.

Hubby had to play puzzle bubble with the packages, because the door wouldn’t close!! Woopsy. But now we are stocked with roasts, steaks, oxtails, and bones until the fall. With ground beef, I think we are good for a whole year. If anyone wants to do a trade, let me know!!! I got tons of ground beef. I need to start being more creative with ground beef too. I’m not a meat loaf fan, but maybe I should try it out.

After I made a mess of our chest freezer, I had to leave and go to a graduation. Luckily we got there late, and didn’t have to stay very long. When I got home, hubby had made spaghetti, but he was kind enough to quickly cook up a chicken sausage for me. I didn’t have any emergency veggies lying around, so I just warmed up some roasted sweet potatoes. Here was my dinner, with a side of watermelon.

One more day of work and I get a 4 day weekend! WOO HOO!
